Blue Globe: Stories from the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu.  Students chose an artwork from the Gallery's collection online and wrote a short piece of writing inspired by it.

Ethlyn the Lady

She is the daughter of the duke, posed
showing her face, yet is masked
stares out from under mascara
holds the string instruments of blistered fingers
that the photographer placed in her lap.
She is a doll, poised
holding her posture for the picture
to be presented to calling suitors
strangers from noble families
who wish to win her hand.
She is a model lady, but thinks beauty is
black mock-leather gloves
its fakeness is felt by the wearer alone
as the camera paints a picture
of the smile she doesn’t wear.
