Casebrook Intermediate students take over MP’s office

Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey enjoyed a special visit in his Parliamentary offices this week when about 40 students from Casebrook Intermediate arrived in Bowen House to spend the afternoon with their MP.

“We’ve been planning this visit for some weeks after the school let me know they were coming,” Doocey said. “We had to put in requests for chairs to come in from other offices!”

The students attended Question Time and were shown around Parliament Buildings before descending on their MP’s office for some much needed juice and biscuits – with some healthy fruit included.

A highlight of the visit was having a class photo taken with their Member of Parliament. The MP also arranged for Hon Nicky Wagner, Minister of Customs and Minister of Disability, and Associate Minister of Conservation and Associate Minister of Greater Christchurch Regeneration, to visit his office to talk to the children.

“The students enjoyed hearing about Customs and the work to stop crime at our borders,” Doocey said.

The MP was hard-pressed to keep up with a barrage of questions that ranged from his reasons for getting into politics to how many days he worked in a week.

“I wanted to help make their trip one to remember,” Doocey said. “I don’t know who enjoyed it more – me or them.”
