Room 16's online learning.

By Bev Bell | Posted: Tuesday May 5, 2020

Four weeks of Google Hangouts, phone calls, constant emails and online learning, still hasn't dimmed Room 16's enthusiasm for learning!

This is what we've been up to.

LITERACY

We’ve done a whole lot of different topics while in lockdown: New Zealand heroes, Whale Rider movie study, EP reading comprehension and The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas novel and activities.

I've loved the writing prompts that Mrs Bell sets for us. They include weird and wacky topics including: Kangaroos, Kids getting muddy, Naughty dogs, Mischievous girls and boys, Fussy eaters etc. Examples can be seen here.

But it doesn’t come that easily, oh no. All writing prompts come with extra challenges such as no repeating words, no ‘A’ or ‘T’, words that you must add-in, each sentence must have 3 words beginning with ‘B’ etc. All these have proved challenging, but Team 16  found a way around them (without cheating, of course!). - Leon

Room 16 students have also been keeping a lockdown diary. This is one entry.

MATHS

For maths, we have been doing Yes Ikan as warmups where we solve 8 questions. Then we do Education Perfect where we either do level 4 or 5 maths which has been personalised to what we need to learn. Lastly, we do basic facts for us to be able to master them.

Maths jokes:

  • Why are circles so hot? Because they are 360 degrees.
  • Why are obtuse angles so depressed? Because they are never right.
  • Why do plants hate maths? Because it gives them square roots.

INQUIRY

Our inquiry topic that we are completing in lockdown is the 'History of Aotearoa'.

We watched 14 captivating podcasts by Radio New Zealand and then wrote summaries on them. We covered our whole history, beginning with the separation of the continent Zealandia from Gondwanaland, the arrival of the Maori, British colonisation and the Treaty of Waitangi and the New Zealand Wars. The podcasts then discussed the sacrifices of our brave military personnel in World War I and World War II, most notably Gallipoli. We were then thrust into the modern post-war era and learnt about Rogernomics, the strong re-awakening of the Maori culture and its significance to New Zealand, the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, the country finding its own identity and place in the world, right up to modern-day New Zealand. I enjoyed them and learnt a lot about the country I now live in. - Lucas

HARD MATERIALS

Hard Materials over the lockdown has been really fun. We have been making scale models of something in our bubble. People made lots of different things like caravans, sheds, cars, boats, laundries, furniture and even wheelie bins. I chose to make our family caravan. When it was finished it looked awesome and I enjoyed making it. I can’t wait to get back to school to see what everybody else has made. - Toby

ART

I have been loving trying new activities for Art with things that I have found at home - magazines, old birthday cards, stickers, badges and coloured paper were great things to use for a collage. My favourite Art activity was making a Public Service Announcement using the app Stop-Go Motion. It creates a video by linking heaps of photos together and each photo has one small change from the previous photo. William

DIGI

Over lockdown our digi class has been working on coding with Scratch and 3D printing with Tinker-cad. Scratch involved coding pathways and experimenting and learning from other peoples games. In Tinker-cad we have been designing a house and learning new ways to create different shapes. This week we get to try out a mapping activity which involves using PisKEL. - Kaitlyn

Everyone has been busy with their home learning and wider curriculum learning as well. The very musically talented Tahana has been practising a song. Click here to listen.
