Room 14 Online Learning

Connecting via a video, learning from the comfort of your own home, being self managed learners and learning the ins and outs of remembering to check emails. It's all been happening on Room 14's online learning space.

Over the last few weeks as we have all made the shift from 'real life' teaching to 'online' teaching. Room 14 has taken up this challenge with growing confidence.

Video conferences have provided that real life connection with each other where we all learnt the importance of muting our microphones!

Writing: Room 14 for the last two weeks watched a short animation called Replay and then were asked to write a narrative, taking on the role of one of the characters and telling the story through their eyes, or from a different perspective. Some really creative, descriptive and exciting writing came from this.

Inquiry: Focusing around Tūrangawaewae (Our Place to Stand) has seen the students creating collages of landscapes in NZ and also overseas, discussing how these are formed and why they are important. We have also been looking at places of importance to us in NZ or the world and describing these places and sharing why they are important. A lot of the places we looked at had family connections. Compare and Contrast diagrams were also done of places in NZ and somewhere overseas or even another place in NZ.

Friday Creative: Each Friday there has been a small art challenge for the students to be a bit creative. First challenge was creating your name with things in your house, and the second was a nature challenge using elements from the garden to create a symmetrical piece of art. We are currently doing a 'video' challenge, to be shared when completed.

Reading: Room 14 is lucky that they have two teachers! Mrs Petersen has been working on novel studies with the class. Miss Wilkinson set them an infographic challenge using Canva to recall information about Muhammad Ali. Some of these can be viewed in this article.
