On Sunday the 1st of November, the famous Casebrook Kapa Haka group competed in Tūhono, a Kapa Haka competition held in the Christchurch Town Hall.

When they arrived at the venue, they had a short practise before making their way to their seats. Casebrook were on 4th, which gave them some time to scope out the competition. The competitors were strong, but so was Casebrook. When it was Casebrook’s turn, they did not hold back.

They started with a strong waiata with actions (Ka Poipoia), a great start to a great performance. They then moved on to their first haka (Taurekatia Ra), which then transitioned into another fierce haka (Waitaha Ripo Ripo). Lastly, they performed a beautiful waiata called Rere Rere Ripo.

“We let all our energy out on that stage. When we came off, we had nothing left in the tank,” Tahana Waretini said when later interviewed about the competition. Casebrook’s performance was impressive and they received the following awards:

  • Best male speaker

  • Best male leader

  • Best female leader

  • Best solo singer/group of singers

  • Best waiata with actions

  • Best haka

Great job Casebrook and good luck for your next performance!
