Tuahiwi Marae Visit

In the last week of Term 1, a large group of our Year 8 students attended this trip.

The day started with a powerful powhiri; where we were welcomed onto the marae. We were lucky enough to have Whaea Tania lead the karanga for our school as we were walked on to the marae.

Each student had to prepare their mihi to share with one another. This was a great time to connect together as a group and learn about our Tūrangawaewae. There was lots of 'a-ha' moments as these connections were made.

Following this we were broken into two workshops where we unpacked The Creation Story from the Ngāi Tahu perspective and the one that is widely known across Aotearoa. We drew comic book strips of the story and retold it to each other.

During our time at the marae we learnt all about the Kaiapoi area and how it was a stronghold for the Māori people. It was interesting to learn about Kāiapoi Pā and how it was used. A field trip out here is definitely on our list.

A huge thank you to Matua Willy & Whaea Tania for supporting our group.
