Mātauranga Māori Comes Alive for TPW 43 & 44

Mātauranga Māori and the voyagers has been a focus at Casebrook for the last Academic Term.

TPW 43 & 44 last week visited the Canterbury Museum and were lucky enough to be taken back in time to learn about our early explorers and voyagers.

Hātesa, a curator at the museum, allowed the class to see original artefacts that came from various pacific islands. This included fishing lures, kava bowls, food storage containers as well as a vaka that came from Hawaii.

This trip allowed TPW 43 & 44 to witness first hand the ingenuity that our early explorers had to get to Aotearoa from the various islands. They learnt about currency they used, foods they ate, places they visited and how they navigated to get here. There was no Google Maps in those days!

After the trip to the museum they were challenged to a scavenger hunt around the Botanical Gardens and local City Scapes. It was a great day for TPW 43 & 44 to be out in the city and to cement their learning of our Inquiry unit.

The next step is for TPW 43 & 44 to use their insider knowledge to create their waka and vaka for their 'so what' of Inquiry.

A huge thank you to our whānau who came and supported our trip.
