Tōtaranui Kāhui Ako - Ki o Rahi Festival

On Wednesday the 2nd of November, Casebrook Intermediate hosted 120 students from our local primary schools for a Ki o Rahi Festival.

Three of our kāhui ako primary schools (Bishopdale, Cotswold, and Northcote) have been learning the traditional Māori game - Ki o Rahi. Student leaders from Casebrook went to each school before the festival to run some training sessions with their Year 5 and 6 students.

The festival had a total of 9 teams with each team playing 5 games throughout the day. The purpose of the festival was to give students an opportunity to get active but the emphasis was on having fun, rather than winning.

The tournament began at approximately 10:00 am and teams played two games before stopping for morning tea. Then they played another two games before stopping for lunch. At lunch, students were rewarded for all of their hard work with a refreshing Juicie which was the perfect treat for a hot spring day. Students played one final game after lunch and were exhausted by the end of the day, but they all enjoyed themselves.

A big thank you to the Casebrook students who reffed, coached, and supported the Year 5/6 students throughout the day. You did a fantastic job. Thanks to the Tōtaranui Kāhui Ako for supporting the event by organising buses and Juicies.

Fingers crossed we can run the festival again next year!
