Community Planting Day – Papanui Bush (Langdons Road)

Papanui Rotary are holding a community planting day in Papanui Bush (between Tony's Tyre Service and the railway line) on Saturday 10 June 2023 starting at 9am.

Please come along and help to re-establish a small portion of the 30 acres of native bush that used to be here. There will be a new boardwalk which is currently in the process of being built that will lead all the way around to the new Braintree Trust at the back of Northlink Shopping Mall.

So grab your gummies and gardening gloves and spend a morning planting in the fresh air and (hopefully) sunshine. Better bring a coat though just in case and don't forget your water bottle to keep yourself hydrated.

Gather at 9am at the frontage on Papanui Road. The morning will be followed by a sausage sizzle for those who participated in planting.

Contact Denis McMurtrie on 021 125 1920.

Cancer Society – We're going to be neighbours!

Did you know that the Cancer Society is moving to Papanui? We’re building an amazing new centre at 74 Langdons Road (next to Braintree and in behind Northlink) and it is only a few months away from opening!

The new Canterbury Cancer Centre is going to be a cancer support hub and a 50-room hotel all in one. Each year, thousands of people from all over the South Island will come to stay in the free hotel-like rooms while they receive cancer treatment here in Christchurch. They’ll be able to jump in one of our free Cancer Society shuttles and be taken to the hospital for their treatment and back again afterwards. Often their partner or support person will stay with them, and they will be able to enjoy some time together at the local eateries, shops and other facilities. The new cancer centre will also be a place where local people with cancer can access free support and counselling and attend support groups and other programmes.

You’ll notice we’ve mentioned that word FREE a few times – the Cancer Society’s services are available to anyone with any kind of cancer free of charge. Of course, the services are not free to provide – they’re funded by donations, bequests and fundraising by the community.

There are lots of ways for both individuals and businesses in the local Papanui community to get involved with the new centre. For example, you could:

  • Sign up as a volunteer.
  • Offer discounted services or products to people visiting the cancer centre or staying in the accommodation.
  • Sponsor a room at the new centre.
  • Purchase an item for the new centre on the online registry at www.moreprecious.co.nz

Make sure your friends and loved ones know the Cancer Society’s support services are available to anyone with cancer and they just need to get in touch online at www.cancer.org.nz or by phoning 0800 226 237.

To connect or find out more, give our Partnership Manager, Janice Porter-Hoare, a call on 021 228 3542 or email janice@cancercwc.org.nz.

Grandees – what do they do?

We are a team of more mature people who spend time at St Albans Primary School helping children with their reading. Each volunteer spends one hour a week from Monday to Thursday working with a small group of children. I'm sure there is no need to emphasise the importance that reading skill is to a child's development. We are at school Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1.30-2.30pm and Wednesday morning 10.45-11.45am.

Blokes are especially welcome as children often don't have a male role model in their lives. If you have one hour a week to spare for this wonderful work, please call Wendy Nuthall on 352 2284 or email wendyn@xtra.co.nz.
