City 'cook off' encourages healthy, resourceful eating habits in children

Last Tuesday Casebrook hosted the first Root To Tip Cooking Competition

The Garden to Table and Christchurch City Council initiative is aimed to encourage Year 7 and 8 pupils to get excited about healthy, fresh food.  The competition required the competing schools to create a two course vegetarian meal, using at least 80 percent seasonal produce, grown in their own school gardens or sourced from family/community gardens.  The additional challenge was  to minimise waste and to use ingredients from "root to tip", encouraging resourcefulness.

The students had one hour to present their starter course to the judges and a further 45 minutes to serve their main dish.

Xenobia Barr and Olivia Ineson represented us really well.  They skillfully prepared their innovative dishes and impressed the judges with their vegetable crackers served with homemade Labne and Casbrook-style cannelloni .

We were also lucky enough to have What Now filming at our event. They will be featuring the Root to Tip Competition this Sunday 27th of August
