Social Media and Pre-teens

There was a lot of media interest recently around the social-media student ban request by Kowhai Intermediate. Social media in the hands of intermediate aged children can be risky business.

Kowhai Intermediate School in Auckland is asking parents to ban their children from using social media at home as it is at school.

At Casebrook, we too have experienced an increased number of social media incidents, 99% of the time these take place in unsupervised situations and outside of school time.

Here is a great interview with tech expert Juha Saarinen on RNZ a couple of Sundays ago that might help parents make some decisions around their children and the need for social media.

There is some good advice in this interview around action you can take to limit use and ensure your child doesn't get caught up in negative online behaviour.
