Korean Visitors

Over the last four weeks Casebrook has hosted over 30 teachers and 30 students from South Korea.

Room 10's Experience - By Jason and Owen

Over the last three weeks, Room 10 was lucky to have two Korean teachers and one Korean student spend the week with us. Their names were Ji-Hee, Ji-Hye and Andrew. The purpose of their visit was to learn how New Zealand schools run. They visited Casebrook and St Thomas', spending a week at each.

The teachers taught us about Korean dining etiquette. We learnt about what is considered polite and rude when dining at the dinner table or when out in a restaurant. They also taught us how to use chopsticks and also tested us with a quiz. There were some similarities with New Zealand and Korean manners.

Some of the things we learnt included:

- The youngest sets the table.

- You do not slurp noodles when eating them.

- As many dishes are shared, you put your food onto your own plate before eating.

- You should not be on your phone at the table.

- You should give thanks at the beginning and end of the meal by saying 'jal meok get seumnida' which means I will eat well and thank you for preparing this meal.

Andrew was one of 12 students who were spread around the school. He was from Seoul, South Korea. The students were billeted out to homestays during their time here. They got to do many fun activities based in Canterbury like going to Orana Park, Go Karting, Laser Strike and so much more.

We had a great time learning about their culture and teaching them about New Zealand. We hoped they enjoyed their stay too.
