Water quality

Mrs Helen Rutter, a scientist and expert in her field, spoke to Rooms 9, 10 and 11 about water quality.

On Thursday the 19th of November, Rooms 9, 10 and 11 gathered together to listen to an environmental talk from Helen Rutter.

She first talked about the water cycle, and how it works. The topic then moved onto what the difference is between poor and good water quality. She explained that the drinking water quality in Christchurch is actually very good.

Next up was the uses of freshwater, for instance: drinking, agriculture, washing clothes, watering plants, recreation and culture. Did you know that there are 33 pesticides listed in the WHO drinking water standards?

The last subject was contamination of water. This includes bacteria, fungi and viruses. Mrs Rutter showed us a model of the path water takes through the ground to rivers and lakes. She added food colouring to a scientific look-alike model of what it looks like under the soil.

A special thanks to Mrs Helen Rutter for coming in and sharing her scientific knowledge.
